Effective teams are productive and satisfying to be a part of. That is, they establish agreed strategy or goals, and effectively manage decisions and tasks to achieve those goals. Members of effective teams are aware of their external context, respond well to change, and manage relationships with stakeholders. In doing so, effective teams interact well with each other, and establish a positive and inclusive team climate.
Our approach to optimising the effectiveness of teams is based on our model of high-performing teams:
The process starts with the why—the Purpose or raison d’etre of the team. The next step is to focus on how the People in the team interact, before moving onto the Processes that drive the effective performance of the team. Finally, effective teams can be unsuccessful if they fail to understand their Position in the external context in which they operate.
